Outline

1. Topic: College Athletes

2. Research Question (s): Do college athletes deserve to be paid for their contributions to the school?

3.Thesis or Hypothesis: College athletes deserve to be paid for their contributions to a school because of the revenue they bring in, the time and effort they put into it, and the global recognition it brings for the school.

Main Point 1

  • Explain/ show how much money college sports generates for their schools.

These college athletes bring in millions of dollars for their universities. The universities do not give back to these players for all of the money they bring to the university and deserve to be paid!

Main Point 2

  • Explain/ show with facts how the NCAA takes control of these students athletes lives and how they give them nothing in return.

The NCAA is considered to be a non profit company but they make over 1 billion dollars in profit each year. The NCAA has created many laws and regulations that prohibits student athletes from receiving commissions based off their work from anyone.

A counter argument would be that the NCAA gives out scholarships for these student athletes to attend college for a discounted price or even for free.

Main Point 3

  • Explain how these players spend so much time in between sports and school.

These students spend more than 60 hours a week between classes and practices and games. With that being said, even though they work more than a full time job they do not get paid anything.

Counter argument is how students get tutors and study sessions built into their schedule and have more leeway with due dates for assignments with teachers.

Main Point 4

  • Students don’t live a normal college kid life, so why should they be treated like one.

A lot of people say that these young adults are not ready to make millions even hundreds of thousands of dollars because they are still young college kids. That being said, the mindset these student athletes have with all the travel they do, interviews, and time being shown on tv and every decision they make being watched closely means that if they get treated as adults in the mind of the media they should also get treated as adults in the eyes of the NCAA.

Counter Argument

How students get tutors and study sessions built into their schedule and have more leeway with due dates for assignments with teachers.
